What are Claude Skills?
Claude Skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude loads on-demand to handle specialized tasks.
Each Skill is a self-contained package that teaches Claude a specific workflow - like creating branded documents, analyzing data with your company's methods, or automating repetitive tasks. Claude scans available Skills, loads only what's relevant, and applies those instructions to your request.
You can use Skills through Claude.ai, the API, or Claude Code. They work via progressive disclosure - Claude determines which Skills matter for your task and loads just those instructions, preventing context window overload.
Available on all Claude plans including free tier. Anthropic provides built-in Skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDFs. You can also build custom Skills or use community-created ones following the open Agent Skills Standard.
